My full name is Kei Katsunuma--it's Japanese. People with Japanese names are also given symbolic Chinese characters at birth. The common character for Kei symbolizes "grace" and "blessing," but I was given a character that means "Judas tree." My parents claim that they wanted to give me something that symbolized growth: ever-changing, yet sturdy. My dad also enjoyed an essayist named Kei Morimura, who had the Judas tree character. I appreciate the evolving and adapting factor of my character.
My parents also wanted to give me a name that was easy to pronounce in both English and Japanese, since they knew I was going to grow up and live in the United States, but not forget my roots (no pun intended).
